Historic pillars renovated

Posted on June 18, 2015 by Maria_Fowler

Two pillars that are the sole remains of the original main entrance to Cliff House have been renovated and now bear information plaques courtesy of the Harwich Society.Cliff House stood in what is now Cliff Park and was the largest dwelling in the town prior to its demolition around 1909. The outline of the house is marked in bricks within Cliff Park and the pillars originally supported the ornate gates to the estate’s entrance. The historic pillars were renovated by Tendring District Council at the request of the Harwich Society and the Society has now placed information plaques on both pillars.Vice president of the Harwich Society, Andy Rutter, says, “Because of their location people do not realise that the two pillars mark the original entrance to Cliff House and are of local historical importance. We are grateful to TDC for the restoration work and we are pleased that they now bear plaques explaining their significance.”The wording on the plaques is as follows:The larger plaque states ‘These two pillars were originally taller and carried the ornamental gates of the main entrance of Cliff House, quite the finest house in the town and demolished about 1909.’The other plaque states ‘This gatepost marks the entrance to Cliff House, the MP’s large residence. The site is marked with a brick outline in the park.’For further information please contact Andy Rutter on 01255 503429 Garry Calver on 01255 551940 www.harwich-society.co.ukRegistered with the Civic TrustRegistered Charity No. 261798
