Mayflower Rose planting at Minesweeper’s Memorial

Posted on December 12, 2014 by Maria_Fowler

PUPILS HELP PLANT MAYFLOWER ROSES AT MEMORIAL SITE.Community representatives gathered around a town war memorial site in Dovercourt today to watch pupils from schools in the area plant new shrubs.A special variety of Mayflower Rose had been selected to brighten up the Minesweeper’s Memorial in Marine Parade.Tendring District Council (TDC) decided to remove existing flowers - with the approval and backing of Harwich Town Council.Around 60 roses costing about £500 were put in their place by the youngsters from Spring Meadows School, St Josephs, Chase Lane, All Saints Church of England, Harwich Community Primary and Mayflower Primary. The Mayflower is the name of a Harwich ship skippered by town resident Christopher Jones which set sail for America in 1620 with the Pilgrim Fathers on board. Trevor Mills, TDC’s Open Space and Transport Manager, said the type of rose was especially selected for its association with Harwich.“The planting all went well and I think the children enjoyed themselves,” he said.“We were pleased to have them there along with other groups - such as the Mayflower Project – which meant it was a real community activity.” For further information on this press release contact Nigel Brown, Tendring District Council’s Communications Manager on 01255 686338.PHOTO Copyright © Maria Fowler 2014
